Accessibility at McCoy — Surface
McCoy wants every learner to be able to use Surface, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification, voice control or other assistive technology.
Our standard
Surface aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. It is also evaluated against the Revised Section 508 standards and EN 301 549. Our Accessibility Conformance Report (VPAT®) is available on request from support@mccoy.org.
Accessibility features
- Keyboard: every part of Surface, including every question type, works with the keyboard alone.
- Press Tab to move between controls and Shift+Tab to move back.
- In a multiple-choice question, Tab moves into the answer list, the arrow keys select an answer, and Tab moves on to Submit answer.
- Ordering questions offer "Move up/Move down" buttons. You can also pick a card up with Space, move it with the arrow keys, and drop it with Space.
- A Skip to main content link appears on the first press of Tab.
- Screen readers:
- Pages have descriptive titles, headings and landmarks.
- Answer results, lesson step changes and completion are announced.
- Images and figures have text descriptions.
- Math is exposed to assistive technology as speech text or MathML.
- Display:
- Light, dark and system themes are available in View options (in a lesson) or in the navigation menu.
- Lesson text can be set to small, regular or large.
- Surface supports browser zoom up to 400% and follows your device's reduce motion setting.
- It also supports Windows High Contrast mode.
- Read aloud: lessons can be read aloud. You can pause, skip and change the reading speed.
- No time limits: lessons and assessments are never timed, and tests can be retaken (subject to your institution's settings).
Supported technology
Surface works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Its accessibility was last tested on 2026-10-22 with VoiceOver in Safari on macOS, keyboard-only use, browser zoom to 400%, and High Contrast (forced-colors) mode.
Math is delivered as MathML. For math-heavy courses we recommend a screen reader with math support: VoiceOver with Safari (macOS and iOS), JAWS, or NVDA with the free MathCAT add-on.
Known limitations
- Some lessons include video. Videos have captions, narration that describes what is shown on screen, and a transcript. If a video you need does not, email support@mccoy.org and we will provide them.
Feedback and help
If you have trouble using Surface or need content in another format, email support@mccoy.org. You can also use Report a problem in any lesson. We acknowledge accessibility reports within 5 business days and aim to fix confirmed issues within 30 days, prioritizing anything that blocks a learner. Until a fix is released, we will help you find a workaround.
